How to Choose the Perfect Sofa by Dorene Gomez

So many choices...so little time...how do I find that perfect sofa?

Rule of thumb is that you always want to consider your lifestyle before determining the best sofa choice for you. Some other things that need to be considered are: How the room is to be used, the size of the room, what kind of fabric and color is appropriate for it's use, if you have children and/ or pets and the style of the sofa.

So, let's consider that lifestyle of yours. Will the sofa be used daily as in a  family/great room, or will it only be used occasionally? If it will get heavy use, then you would need to be more selective when it comes to fabric, especially if you have children and/or pets. Stain resistant darker fabrics with a pattern and a high wear rating are usually best in high use rooms. Today, with a wide array of lifestyles, there are many beautiful fabrics that have high durability ratings to choose from. If you like to curl up on your sofa, make sure the overall depth is at least 40". If the sofa is only to be used occasionally, then you can be more daring in your fabric choice.

To determine the size and shape of the sofa, you would need an accurately measured floor plan that shows the room as seen from above. This will guarantee that the furniture pieces will fit the space. Too many costly mistakes are made by home owners trying to fit over sized or undersized furniture pieces into their spaces. If you have a large great room a sectional might be best to cozy up on in front of a fireplace or maybe you could consider two sofas facing each other for conversation. If the space is a bit tight try using a love seat with one or two comfortable chairs instead of a sofa.

Style and Color is certainly an extension of your design taste. A tailored sofa with squared arms would work nicely in  a modern space, whereas a pillow back sofa with rolled arms would work well in a traditional space. If you like to mix things up, use a neutral sofa and add fun patterned pillows, accessories and an accent rug.

Sofas are usually the largest and most used piece of furniture in a room, so making the right choice is an important one. Let J. Hettinger Interiors help you find that perfect sofa.
