Home Furnishing Trends for 2016: Finding the right balance of style, sophistication, color and comfort for the New American Family by Ron Smith

The New American Family is often multi-generational and requires functional, practical living spaces both inside and out. Whether you are considering building a new home, remodeling or redecorating, planning is critical. Having a vision, a wish list, and the hope for perfect harmony in bringing everyone's requests together can be daunting. Communication will be key to moving forward, expressing your likes and dislikes will begin the process of editing your choices before you consult with a Design Professional.

Building, remodeling or redecorating a home could be the focus of many future articles, but design and comfort needs to be considered for maximum efficiency, durability, sustainability, and livability in creating an interior that transcends a label or a decade.

In my previous newsletter I stated that the trick is to get it right the first time.
Choosing the right pieces of furniture and accents as well as any other design elements including color and materials. Planning is essential, from a complete interior remodel, to the placement of a decorative item, the placement and proportions of wall hangings and art work, the selection of materials, finishes, color and texture. Creating harmony and balance is  achievable  when all is  considered.

Fads are not trends and of course are not sustainable for timeless design. Accents can be changed or added in the form of pillows or flowers to punch up the color in a neutral space for a season or holiday without disturbing the balance or harmony of a rooms design if it was done well from the start. Your goal should be to create an authentic home environment that is unique to you and your family and not a current fashion statement.

Redecorating with the addition of metallic finishes on hardware, upholstery, accessories and accent pieces is back but in small portions. Leather and suede paired with a woven fabric creates a sophisticated but casual feel for the multi-generational family. Glass accents can be representative of colors in the room but without a plan of placement may disappear and not add to your finished design.

Color is key to almost all design. Designers are using colors from the 70's of maroon and navy, and colors of spices such as cayenne and mustard. Not sure if it's appropriate for everyone, "been there done that", but if you did not live in that era go for it. Select colors you want to see everyday and can live with, colors that appeal to all, then nothing would be out of consideration. Don't be afraid of color. Choosing the wrong wall color just costs a few gallons of paint and a few hours of time.
