Artwork Done Right! by Stephanie Yeraka

The artwork in your home and place of business reflect your personality, memories of travel or unique design style. Art adds the pop of color needed against a neutral wall to complete a room. Whether it is an abstract, a beautiful Tuscan scene, a photograph, or a floral painting; the art surrounding you needs to reflect your individual taste. There are many ways to place art on a wall depending on the scale of the room and the scale of the piece.

Groupings of art along a staircase wall look great if done right. Various frame sizes with the same design placed just above eye level can follow the curve or slope of the staircase. These frames can house family photos, photos taken from family vacations, or work from your favorite artist. For a more eclectic look, mix wood stained frames and painted wood or metal frame styles. Space them equally from each other and you have a beautiful custom designed art wall.

Thinking outside the box, bookcases can be designed and organized with colorful, coordinating book spines and pieces purchased from travel. Try laying three to four books down to create a flat surface for a picture frame or candle and stagger them as you work your way up the bookcase. Combine like books together, this includes heights and colors. Even heights are pleasing to the eye and gives the designer look! Magically, your useful bookcase wall has become a beautiful work of art!

Artwork in a dining room above a buffet or  on a large wall can be larger in scale to fit the space. Flanking a mid sized square piece with two vertical complementing pieces fills the wall nicely without crowding. A wall above the sofa in the living or family room may need a collage of several canvases to add height. The style of any piece should reflect the look of the room but the most important factor is the emotion that you personally get from it. Art should usually be placed just below center for the height and centered on the wall. Ask someone with a trained eye and get help from professional art installers when hanging important pieces.

Commercial office furniture needs to be selected with many different tastes in mind. Catering to the masses is best achieved with artwork that does not convey a strong message yet still adds color and interest to the space. Long hallways need to be broken up with various sized artwork, sculptures, or metal wall art.

Creating a theme whether it be a color palate or style of art is important to define when selecting pieces for any space.
